The Best Afternoon Ever!

My class is awesome! Absolutely awesome. So awesome, in fact, that I need to shout it out to the world,

Awesome class

We had such a fun time Friday afternoon at our school-wide dance celebration. There were so many great performances to watch within an atmosphere that oozed positivity and encouragement. It was an amazing afternoon – one that will stick out in our minds for a long time. We were the last student act of the day, and we were pumped to perform ….. because we had a little trick up our sleeve. I’ve decided to post the complete video here because truthfully, I could relive those 4 minutes a number of times over and over and I’d still be smiling ear to ear.

Now, unfortunately, the quality of video doesn’t quite do it complete justice, but I can assure you it was truly epic, and you know it’s been a great event when all you hear afterward is:

  • “That was so much fun!”
  • “I loved that!”
  • “That was the best afternoon ever!”

In fact, when it was over, a retired teacher in the audience approached our principal to say it was the best school dance event he’d seen in all his 35 years teaching. I’d have to agree. What made our contribution really special to me was the fact that the best parts of our dance were choreographed by the students and it was their idea to add the glow-sticks and turn out the lights. I’m so glad I listened to them. They were absolutely right.

Top work guys! You have some great movers in your class. I agree that it’s a real plus to have the students do their own choreography. Our school is having a whole school dance event in about 4 weeks. Our class has started learning the jive. We had our first lesson Friday. I think we had a lot of fun – at least I know that I did!

Thanks Mrs. Thompson! I hope you record some of your dance performance so we can see your students jive. I have a few students who learned to jive with their teacher last year, but I don’t really know how to teach it. I’d love to see it being done though.

We agree! That was a spectacular performance. Congratulations, we’re sure you shocked everybody, but we know better – you are all wonderful, creative, and fun students so it should not surprise anyone. :-)

Thanks Mr. Miller and class. Shocking people in a positive way like that feels great! I smiled all weekend thinking about it. :)

We need to get going soon on some activities together I think while we wait patiently for Gurbert #2. What do you say?

You all did such a great job – I am so glad that was there to see it! It looked like so much fun to perform, too. I’ve been to lots of school concerts over the past 8 years…and I agree: this one rocked!

Thanks for making it to our performance Meredith! I left that performance feeling so pumped up full of positive energy. I’ll definitely be voting to do that again as a school.

I had tons of fun particapating in the dance. I really hope I can do something like this just as fun later on. Have you done a dance like this with any other class?

@Jennifer, I had tonnes of fun helping all of you learn it, choreograph it, and plan it! I’ve taught dance before with other classes, but this was the best experience I’ve ever had and it will definitely prompt me to do it again with more classes in the future.

Hi Mrs. Braidwood. The dance was so much fun! I never liked doing these school dances because I would always end up doing the chicken dance or something. This was the most fun dance I’ve ever done. Thank you Mrs. Braidwood for helping us with it!

@Eli, I’m so glad to hear you’ve now had a fun experience with a school dance event. It was pretty amazing wasn’t it?

That dance was very fun. My favourite part was when we turned the lights off and the glow sticks were on. When we turned the lights off half the school started screaming and you couldn’t really hear the song we were dancing to. In the end it was really exciting.

I had a lot of fun at the performance. That looked so cool when we all went at the same time and together, and everyone was particapating in it too.It was weird because when the principal said no screaming, everybody was screaming especially Sierra, you can hear her from the background on the video. She was the only one I could hear. She screamed because it looked cool when the lights went out and the glow sticks were glowing in the dark. I messed up on the dance and I was scared people saw me mess up.I wasn’t even scared when we were dancing infront of the whole school, because I have to dance infront like almost 100 people in dance when we do our recitals. I hope everyone had a fun time dancing.

      @Naomi, @Greg, and @ Chevaun

It was already fun before the glow sticks, but once we added them in too it was fantastic! Wouldn’t you say? I loved how you all came together to perform that in unison. The part I always have loved best is when all the hands from the two classes are in the air at the same time moving in the same direction. It’s like a “sea of hands” and it looks so cool.

We knew we’d hear a bit of screaming when the lights went out – that always happens – but it didn’t last long and I’m hoping the big applause at the end made you feel pretty great about your performance. You were all so awesome. Hmmm …I think I have to say that again … My class is awesome!

You all must be very proud of your dance. It certainly was the highlight for me. The lowlight was when the staff dragged me onto the floor.

Congratulations! This was quite an exciting way to end the dance. When I spoke with several classes on the following Monday, they picked your dance as one of the highlights. The co-ordination, the growing number of dancers topped off with the glow stick effect were powerful components. Well done! Mrs. VdR

    Hi mrs. Braidwood,
The dance was amazing. I had so much fun and turning off the lights just phushed it through the roof. Honestly I didnt know I liked dancing so much. I hope that I will get another chance to do something like that again one day!!!
